Cleaning Tempered Glass Shower Doors – 5 Easy Steps

Cleaning Tempered Glass Shower Doors

One of the advantages of tempered glass is that it is incredibly strong whilst also being crystal clear. However, over time, water, soap and body oils build up and make the glass look cloudy and dirty.

Unlike regular glass, tempered glass is easily damaged and needs to be treated with care. To keep your tempered glass shower doors in good condition, use soapy water and a sponge to dry them clean. Then, buff them clean with a microfibre cloth. This method won’t damage the glass and will leave a streak-free finish.

Instructions:

  1. Combine 2 cups (250mL) of warm water and 8 drops of detergent into a spray bottle.  Measure the water and detergent and pour them into your spray bottle. Screw on the lid and then shake the bottle until the water is foamy.
  • Use a gentle liquid detergent that isn’t labelled as “moisturising, as this can leave a greasy film on your shower doors.
  • You can also use a designated tempered glass cleaner instead of a soapy solution. This can be purchased from your local hardware store or online.
  1. Spray the soapy water liberally over the glass. Start at the top of the shower doors and work your way down to the bottom. Don’t be shy with the spray – try to cover the entire glass surface.
  • If you are cleaning the outside of your shower doors, lay a towel underneath the doors to catch any drips.
  1. Leave the soapy water on the glass for 5 minutes. This gives the soapy water solution time to penetrate any grease, dirt, and mineral deposits on your shower doors. Set a timer and leave the detergent to work its magic.
  2. Remove the soap solution with a wet sponge. Wet a soft sponge and then squeeze out any excess water. Start by scrubbing away and marks and then wipe off the soapy solution. Start at the top of the shower doors and work your way down to avoid any drips.
  3. Buff the glass dry with a microfibre cloth. Microfibre cloths are excellent for cleaning tempered glass because they won’t scratch the glass or leave streak marks. Use long circular motions to buff the glass dry. Keep buffing until you are satisfied with the clarity of the glass.
  • If you don’t have a microfibre cloth, use a squeegee instead. Avoid using paper towels, as these will leave lint on your shower doors.

Will Vinegar Damage Tempered Glass?

Yes. The strong acid in vinegar is too harsh to use on tempered glass and will damage the surface. This can lead to clouding and discolouration.

Instead, opt for a more gentle cleaning solution, such as warm soapy water.

Can I use Windex to Clean Tempered Glass?

Windex is an effective glass cleaner, however, it contains harsh chemicals that can damage tempered glass.

So, whilst it does technically work, we’d suggest a more gentle solution that will keep your tempered glass looking its best. Soapy water, microfibre cloths, or a Magic Eraser are all safe and effective options.

How Do Hotels Keep Glass Shower Doors Clean?

Many hotels have water softeners. These filtration systems remove the minerals from the water. This prevents them from building up on the glass doors and causing a cloudy film.

Hotels also clean and dry the shower doors daily. As a result, dirt, grease and minerals don’t get the chance to build up. This makes it quicker to clean the showers and keeps them looking fresh and shiny.

Tip: Many hotels use squeegees (similar to the type that you would clean your car windows with) to clean their shower doors. These are a great way of creating a streak-free finish. They also remove the water from the glass, which helps to prevent watermarks and mineral deposits.

Do Magic Erasers work on Shower Doors?

Yes, Magic Erasers are effective at removing soap, grime, and oils from shower doors.

Magic Erasers are made from Melamine foam which isn’t strongly abrasive. This means that you can use it safely on tempered glass, plastic, and shower doors with protective coverings.

To clean your shower doors with a Magic Eraser, firmly wipe the eraser back and forth over the glass. Keep rubbing until you are satisfied with the shine and clarity of the shower doors. If the glass has any remaining streaks, use a microfiber cloth to buff it clean.

What is the Best Cleaner For Tempered Glass?

For hard water stains and body oils, soapy water or a store-bought tempered glass cleaner will be most effective.

For a quick clean, use a dry microfibre to improve the shine and clarity of the glass.

Summary

When cleaning your tempered glass shower doors, opt for a gentle solution. Use Soapy water and a sponge to get rid of grease, grime, and water marks. This is a safe and effective way to clean the glass without causing scratches or discolouration. Avoid using vinegar or generic glass cleaners, as these can cause permanent damage.
